Bill has recently taken receipt of a new custom built Low G tenor pan from Kyle Dunleavy of nearby Fort Washington PA. He completely fabricates the barrel before sinking, pounding, tuning, chroming, and tuning. It is over 26" in diameter and has an amazing tone while still capturing the essence of the traditional island sound. You can see some pics on my upcoming gigs/blog page.
Bill performs on an Extended Range Tenor steel pan hand crafted by Panyard Inc. from Akron Ohio. This instrument was an experimental project from the mid 1990s and only about fifteen were rumored to have been made. The extended range was created to include 3 additional notes below the range of the traditional tenor steel pan (B, Bb and A) The barrel itself is oversized from the traditional 55 gallon barrel construction which gives more surface area to each note creating a warmer tone to the drum.
The Tenor pan notes go around the drum in a circle of fifths while each octave note lies directly to the center.
I will post some pictures and a diagram in the near future. Hope to see you down at the beach where you might have a chance to try my drum for yourself!
